Star Trek Into Darkness (2013): Benedict Cumberbatch Is Not Gary Mitchell?

Correction: Gary Mitchell was killed in the Star Trek ongoing comic, not the movie prequel which debuts in January. The Star Trek ongoing is still said to be canon for the J.J. Abrams universe. The article has been updated to reflect the changes.
If you have been following all the Star Trek Into Darkness news you know that Abrams runs a tight ship. He erected barriers to keep out the paparazzi, released a three second "clip" of Spock, and only recently revealed the synopsis, which basically told us a whole lot of nothing.
However, there happens to be a Star Trek ongoing comic book that is set within Abrams' same universe. It's from IDW Publishing.
And it's canon, too.
Well, in one of the issues, Gary Mitchell dies.
GiantFreaknRobot has it from one of their readers that Mitchell takes a phaser blast in an issue and is given a space-burial, similar to Spock's from Star Trek III. So Gary Mitchell could be out of the picture.
However, there's still another possibility, Benedict Cumberbatch is not Mitchell, but someone else.
But if he ends up being Mitchell, the IDW issues might be worth picking up.
Star Trek Into Darkness has a May 17th, 2013 release date in 3D, is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Leonard "Bones" McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu and Benedict Cumberbatch as an unnamed villain.
