Though Legendary tapped Travis Beacham back in December to return to pen a Pacific Rim sequel, a part 2 is not guaranteed as the movie has failed to connect with the U.S. audience.

Raking in only $84 million domestically, Guillermo del Toro's epic robot monster movie could be facing its own path of destruction as it goes up against the Chinese this Wednesday.

What is being described as a make or break for a Pacific Rim 2, TheWrap speculates that the sequel depends on how well the Chinese audience comes out for the movie.

Internationally, Pacific Rim has done quite well with a $140 million gross, and if it gets another $50 million from China, plus more from its Japan and Brazil debuts, it seems likely that Legendary will go forward with the sequel.

It's even quite possible that Pacific Rim could do better than $50 million in China as the last Transformers movie scored $145 million, which was a big blockbuster robot movie as well.

Recently, Guillermo del Toro even spoke about what might be explored in Pacific Rim 2 which would feature a Jaeger-Kaiju hybrid as well as Gypsy Danger 2.0.
