picHenry Cavill mentioned a few of the Superman comic books he is currently reading (or studying?!) for his role as both Clark Kent and Big Blue in the Zack Snyder directed Man Of Steel.

"I did love Superman: Doomsday, The Death of Superman, Superman Returns, The New Krypton Saga especially, Red Son. Red Son was cool because it had the alternate story line. A lot of them I love, but recently, the one I read most recently was The New Krypton Saga, and I really enjoyed that," Cavill told Io9.

Let's take a closer look and see if they offer up any clues!

Take from these what you will!

The Death of Superman, Superman Returns: Cavill is obviously referring to the 1992 storyline where Doomsday "killed" Superman, maybe the "Funeral For A Friend" and "Reign of the Supermen" storylines, as well? All this leads up to when Supes comes back.

Superman: Doomsday: The "Superman: Doomsday" could be a reference to the 1994 Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey, which interestingly enough was about Doomsday's origin as being genetically-engineered and created by the Kryptonians, which further led to the Krypton's interest in genetic engineering.

Why interesting? Because according to CBN's Man Of Steel script spoilers, Zod wants to engineer a new Kryptonian race.

Obviously the common element here is - Doomsday! There's been rumors of the Superman killer for sometime, even back to Tim Burton's defunct "Superman Lives."

The New Krypton Saga: This sees 100,000 Kryptonians from Kandor, the former capital city of Krypton, now become residents on Earth. How this could be related to the Man Of Steel, is that this essentially sets up a man vs. "aliens" feud, with General Lane at the forefront. So far two (here and here) Generals have been named in the new movie, in addition to a similar sounding battle being mentioned in our script spoilers. Also, this sees how Zod gets free of the Phantom Zone.

Red Son: An "Elseworlds" tale written by Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) that is a "What if Superman has been raised in the Sovie Union?" story. What's interesting about this is that Lex Luthor uses Superman's DnA to create a clone - Bizarro! Zack Snyder has said, "There could be a character in the movie that other people might refer to as Superman."

Of course, Cavill could just be reading everything he can get his hands on, and thought of these when asked.

Still, by the looks of the above, this Superman sounds like he will have his hands full!
