5264 Moments ago it was officially announced by Disney and LucasFilm that J.J. Abrams will be directing Star Wars Episode VII which is slated for a 2015 release.

So what does that mean about the Star Trek franchise?

Abrams rebooted the Star Trek universe with the 2009 movie quite successfully and looks to be just as successful this year with Star Trek Into Darkness, but with the new Star Wars movie does it signal the end of Star Trek for the director?

If a reporter for Variety is anything to go by (via JoBlo), it doesn't spell the end of Star Trek for Abrams, at least not completely.

What it might end is J.J. Abrams as the director of Star Trek 3, as Marc Graser, tweeted the following:

J.J. Abrams to produce a third STAR TREK movie and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, according to Paramount. STAR WARS doesn't kill his involvement..

So if we go by those words, it seems that J.J. Abrams will be on Star Trek 3 at least in some sort of consulting/producing capacity, perhaps just not as director.

Star Trek Into Darkness has a May 17th, 2013 release date in 3D.
