Many Marvel Cosmic fans are hoping the Guardians of the Galaxy movie is the start of something good. James Gunn will be exploring the opposite side of the Marvel universe next August as he brings Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon and Groot to the big screen in an epic science-fiction movie masterpiece.

With Marvel Comics having a stable of over 5000 characters, there happen to be more cosmic heroes and villains than the aforementioned five. Fans already got a taste of the Marvel Cosmic Universe in the form of the Thor movie as Asgard is an alien civilization. Likewise, The Avengers movie featured the cosmic Chitauri army and the post-credit scene featured Thanos, and Thor 2 promises to be even more cosmic as well. Adam Warlock, one of the most popular Marvel Cosmic characters happens to be a favorite of both Joss Whedon and Clark Gregg, and Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige said some of his favorites are space epics with Star Wars and Star Trek.

Now we hear from James Gunn who shares Marvel Cosmic fans hopes that the Guardians of the Galaxy will lead to other cosmic movies. Most notable amongst many of the cosmic fans is hope for a Richard Rider Nova movie as the Nova Corps have already been spotted in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Speaking with Fandango, James Gunn lets it be known he wants to start the Marvel Cosmic movie universe.

"I want to lay down the rules, I want to start it – I would love to be able to see it grow into other things,” Gunn said. “I love talking about all the other filmmakers, sitting around with the producer pitching ideas for other filmmakers to take on future Marvel projects. It's a great thing to be a part of. And I don't think it's for everybody, but the truth is for me being able to sort of create this movie is a dream come true and just been a great experience."

Speaking of Richard Rider, James Gunn also mentions Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning, the Marvel Cosmic writers behind the recent Guardians of the Galaxy and Nova comic book series. DnA, as the writers are known by, have visited the set in London on at least two occasions. There have been a few different versions of the Guardians of the Galaxy comics including the original to the Jim Valentino '90s series to the popular DnA run, but Gunn says, similar to what Chris Pratt said about Star-Lord, that the movie version will be his own and not specifically following any said comic book creator.

"I had read, I think, most of the Guardians books,” Gunn said. “I was more up to speed on the Abnett Lanning stuff. I had to go back and remind myself. I read a lot of the '90s stuff when it was out, but I had forgotten it by the time this came along. At the risk of sounding pompous, because it's going to be filtered through me, it's going to be its own thing no matter what."

Gunn also talks about auditioning Star-Lord, which you can read more about at the above link.

If Guardians of the Galaxy is a success, which characters would you like to see next? A Nova movie almost seems a given at this point. Personally, I wouldn't mind a Quasar movie as they could even tie it to Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. With Thanos around, maybe Adam Warlock and The Magus aren't far behind?
