With the recent announcement at the San Diego Comic-Con that the Guardians of the Galaxy movie would be part of Marvel Studios' second wave, we now have writer.
Chris McCoy will be rewriting the Guardians of the Galaxy script that was originally penned by Nicole Perlman, cites Heat Vision. Perlman, a graduate of Marvel's defunct writing program, is no stranger to space, having penned the 1986 space shuttle disaster movie, Challenger, as well as having worked on Thor.
While McCoy is a virtual unknown, he does come with a bit of clout as his names appears on the "Black List," which is a list of of top screenplays that have never been produced — meaning it's a list of writers that "should" be looked at.
Heat Vision also says that McCoy's scripts have been "praised for their quirky comedic bent," which should fit well with characters like Rocket Raccoon and Groot especially.
McCoy, an Irish Catholic screenwriter from Boston, Mass. mentioned in a recent 5 part interview - that should be of interest - that for plotting he follows Kurt Vonnegut’s Eight Rules of Writing Fiction citing, “Be a sadist. Now matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them — in order that the reader may see what they are made of--"
In the same interview McCoy also listed some of his favorite comedies, which include Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The interviewer described McCoy's screenplays as " highly entertaining, distinctive, and filled with quirky characters and strong dialogue."
The Guardians of the Galaxy movie will also feature the characters from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's 2008 Marvel comic book of the same name including Star-Lord, Gamora and Drax The Destroyer, the sworn enemy of Thanos (from the mid-credit scene in The Avengers movie which has been released in HD).
The Guardians of the Galaxy movie has an August 1st, 2014 release.
