If you are not familiar with Benedict Cumberbatch, come May of next year you will be as Cumberbatch is set to play John Harrison, the villain of Star Trek Into Darkness.
Cumberbatch will be sure to be in high demand after his performance, and in the following video he jokes that the next franchise he is working on is Star Wars, Bond and Spider-Man.
Of course, he is just joking (right?), but Cumberbatch does at least offer details about John Harrison from Star Trek Into Darkness as he chats with IGN along with fellow Trek star, Alice Eve, who admits she is playing Dr. Carol Marcus, the one time love interest to Captain Kirk and mother to his son, David, from Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan.
Eve also delves into Cumberbatch's character and the story as well.
"I think the interesting thing about the film is it presents two moral structures, so it isn't just as black and white as good versus evil," she tells IGN with Cumberbatch nodding in agreement. "It's which morality do you subscribe to. There are three dimensional problems on either side. There's many layers of ethical and personal quandaries that you come up against that makes it less easy to walk away being clear about 'I hate that man.'"
"Yeah, I think the gray moral area is exacerbated by the metaphor of Star Fleet being a super power, being a force for the greater good," Cumberbatch adds. "And what Harrison brings into the world is the alterative argument of the underdog and what he is fighting for. So like a lot of modern day parallels, while the means may be abhorrent and disgusting in their violence and destruction, of the cause, the impetus is a noble one."
Cumberbatch also says it's nice to be a part of a project that is so secretive, as J.J. Abrams runs a tight ship.
"There is very little, I think in this world, left to the imagination or has any kind of mystique or carries any sort of anticipation, that isn't kind of blown away by trailers and spoilers," he said. "So it's very nice to be a part of a project that respects their audience in that sense and says, 'We are going to give you a bit and just wait and see.'"
Benedict is then asked, "What is the next franchise?" with his immediate response being "Star Wars."
"Star Wars. Obviously." Cumberbatch says matter-of-factly. "No, I'm joking. I'm joking. I'm joking. But of course, Star Wars, Bond, Spider-Man."
To get yourself acquainted with the Benedict Cumberbatch, you can watch Sherlock (available on Netflix), which also stars The Hobbit's Martin Freeman, and which Cumberbatch voices the dragon Smaug as well as that of the necromancer. Sherlock is from Doctor Who's Steven Moffat and an excellent series, one highly recommended.
Star Trek Into Darkness has a May 17th, 2013 release date in 3D
