Warner Bros. confirms via a press release (below) that Anne Hathaway will be playing Selina Kyle - Catwoman, and Tom Hardy will be playing the villain - Bane.
It was previously thought Hathaway was up for the role as either Vicki Vale or Talia G'hul.
Director Christopher Nolan, regarding Anne Hathaway's portrayal of Catwoman, said:
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story."
And on Tom Hardy as Bane:
Fans should be familiar with Catwoman as she was played by actresses Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry.
The character Bane, in the comics, broke Batman's back in the 90s "Knighfall" storyline. Bane was just as smart as he was physically gifted. Bane was born in a Caribbean prison. When his father escaped; it was ruled Bane should take his place and serve out the life sententce. He became the leader of that prison and ended up being experimented on with the drug "Venom" which jacked his abilities up even further. Bane eventually escapes and goes after Batman - because, while in prison, he heard story after story of the Caped Crusader leading to an infatuation with Batman.
The Dark Knight Rises, hits theaters July 20th, 2010 and stars Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman and Michael Caine.
